AQUILON: advanced atmospheric prediction platform with BOLD data and AI
The AQUILON project, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation (CPP2021-008737) and the European Union NextGenerationEU/ PRTR, was created to address one of the key challenges of our time: optimising the use of natural resources through more accurate, accessible, and scalable atmospheric forecasts.
From a technological perspective, AQUILON proposes:
- The integration of NWP (Numerical Weather Prediction) models, BOLD (Big and Open Linked Data) sources, and Linked IoT Data.
- A scalable cloud architecture capable of ingesting, processing, merging, and publishing meteorological data on a continuous basis.
- Deep Learning algorithms trained with heterogeneous datasets to improve data quality and forecast accuracy.
- A new source of Big and Linked meteorological Data, accessible to entities requiring reliable real-time forecasts.
AQUILON focuses on the development of five key outcomes, including the deployment of a comprehensive platform to enhance climate predictions. This solution will support, among other things, the optimal management of renewable energy generation – crucial to accelerating decarbonisation and improving the energy system’s resilience.
An example of how AI, open data, and cloud computing can generate a positive and tangible impact across strategic sectors.
